The Power of Routine

THE POWER OF ROUTINE: HOW A FEW SIMPLE MORNING RITUALS CAN CHANGE THE DAY (AND YOUR STRESS LEVELS)

Morning routines have increasingly become associated with self-optimisation, often filled with ambitious rituals and expectations of how we should begin the day. Yet a meaningful morning routine does not need to be demanding or elaborate. At its heart, it is about creating a little space to pause, connect with yourself and begin the day with greater awareness and intention.

“The ideal ritual is one that supports your individual physiology, lifestyle and state of mind, while being simple enough to sustain,” says Tarannum (Tara) Renavikar, a naturopath at Kamalaya. For her, the first hour after waking matters because the body is already performing a substantial gear change. Cortisol rises naturally around waking, helping us become alert, while metabolism, circulation, digestion and brain activity begin shifting from sleep towards daytime function.

Morning light provides another important signal, helping anchor the circadian rhythm that influences everything from sleep and alertness to body temperature and digestion. While adding movement and conscious breathing, the foundations of a useful morning are already in place.

An anchor, not a checklist
The benefits are not purely physiological. Reaching immediately for email, social media or the news hands the opening minutes of the day to everyone else. Creating a small buffer gives us a chance to arrive in the morning on our own terms before external demands start piling up.

Tara recommends four basic foundations: natural light, hydration, movement and a few moments of stillness. None requires special equipment or heroic levels of discipline, and if time is tight, the routine can be pared back further.

Spending two or three minutes outdoors getting natural light, followed with five to ten minutes of gentle movement, whether stretching, mobility exercises, a short walk or a few sun salutations and a glass of water. Finish with three to five minutes of conscious breathing, meditation, prayer or mantra.

“Ten intentional minutes practiced consistently can be more valuable than an hour-long routine that becomes another source of stress,” she says.

Rituals rather than rules
That emphasis on consistency is important, but it should not harden into rigidity. Regular cues such as waking, moving and eating at broadly similar times can help reinforce the body’s daily rhythms, yet a useful routine also needs to survive travel, illness, school runs and early meetings.

Yoga might work one morning, a walk the next, and a few minutes of breathing in a hotel room when travelling. Tara describes a morning routine as “an anchor rather than a checklist”. The framework can remain even as the details change.

Her advice is to think in terms of rituals rather than rules. If missing one morning produces guilt or a sense of failure, the routine has probably become another source of stress rather than a way to reduce it.

Starting well
At Kamalaya, that philosophy finds expression in Suprabhatam, a morning ritual that moves through cleansing, gentle mobilisation, mantra and pranayama. Its roots lie in the Vedic idea of sattva, the clarity and lightness traditionally associated with early morning.

The same principle can be carried into everyday life. You do not need to recreate an entire morning ritual at home. What matters is creating a few quiet moments to wake gently, connect with yourself and set an intention for the day before turning your attention to screens, schedules and the needs of the world around you.

A grounding morning routine can be beautifully simple: wake, hydrate, spend a little time in the morning light, move your body, breathe consciously and begin the day with intention.

There will always be mornings when even these intentions fall away, and that is part of life. A morning routine is not about perfection, but about creating a rhythm you can gently return to – one that helps you begin the day with greater awareness and intention, rather than simply responding to what comes first.
