How Does Stress Affect Longevity?

HOW DOES STRESS AFFECT LONGEVITY?

Longevity is commonly credited to factors such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, genetics and a positive lifestyle. In recent years, however, studies have increasingly highlighted the role of stress on our lifespan and the profound effect that it can have on our quality and length of life.

Whilst some stress is inevitable, its long-term impact on our health and longevity is underestimated. Prolonged exposure even accelerates ageing, at a cellular level, increasing the risk of chronic diseases and shortening life expectancy by up to 2.8 years according to research at Yale University.

Chronic stress speeds up biological ageing, as measured by an “epigenetic clock” that tracks chemical changes in DNA like chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and hormonal imbalances. Individuals with high stress levels often have an accelerated biological age, meaning their bodies are ageing faster than their chronological age would suggest, which can result in earlier onset of age-related diseases and a shorter lifespan.

Not all stress is harmful though. Short-term, manageable stress can strengthen the body’s resilience and even enhance longevity. This kind of stress, seen in activities like intermittent fasting, cold exposure and moderate exercise, triggers protective mechanisms that improve cellular repair and function.

Chronic stress though (also referred to as toxic stress) overwhelms these defences, leading to systemic damage like fluctuations to cortisol levels, a weakened immune system and sleep disruption. Telomeres, the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, shorten over time. Chronic stress accelerates this shortening, leading to premature cellular ageing and increases the risk of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Chronic stress also triggers persistent low-grade inflammation, known as “inflammaging,” which is strongly linked to heart disease, diabetes and neurodegenerative conditions, as well as hormonal imbalance, with long-term stress disrupting the production of key hormones like cortisol, insulin and growth hormone, all of which play a crucial role in regulating metabolism, immunity and overall health.

While stress is unavoidable completely, adopting some of the lifestyle practices, as highlighted by the experts at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary below, can help mitigate its effects and even slow the ageing process.

Prioritising sleep: Chronic stress often leads to sleep disturbances, which in turn accelerate ageing. Sleep is essential for cellular repair, hormone regulation and immune function. It also affects our motivation to exercise and our ability to make healthy food choices, so establishing a consistent sleep routine is fundamental for a longer and more vibrant life.

Emotional resilience and self-regulation: Individuals with strong emotional regulation and self-control are better protected from the harmful effects of stress. Practising mindfulness, meditation and breathing exercises can help build emotional resilience and reduce its physiological impact.

Exercise as a powerful stress reliever and longevity booster: Regular physical activity reduces cortisol levels, improves insulin sensitivity and enhances the body’s ability to repair damaged cells. Activities such as yoga, Tai Chi and brisk walking are effective at combating stress-related ageing.

Social connections and stress reduction: Engaging in meaningful relationships, joining social groups and maintaining close family ties can help buffer the negative effects of stress since strong social ties have been linked to increased life expectancy, support networks have proven to help reduce stress levels and improve overall health.

Diet and stress management: Dietary habits can help combat the physiological effects of stress. Antioxidant-rich foods help combat oxidative stress, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and support brain health, while magnesium-rich foods help regulate the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

Understanding the connection between stress and ageing gives us the tools to take control of our health, slow the ageing process and ultimately live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.
