SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES

At Kamalaya, sustainability is an integral part of the sanctuary’s philosophy. Since opening in November 2005, Kamalaya has embraced sustainability practices that reflect its commitment to supporting local communities and creating positive environmental, social and economic impact:

  • Kamalaya prioritises locally sourced and seasonal ingredients wherever possible, supporting Thai producers while reducing transport-related carbon emissions. Menus across the sanctuary are thoughtfully designed around fresh, locally available produce, with organic and ethically sourced ingredients selected whenever feasible
  • Long-standing partnerships with trusted local suppliers and producers help ensure ingredient quality while strengthening the local economy. Fresh seafood, seasonal fruit, hydroponic vegetables and other premium ingredients are sourced from carefully selected Thai partners
  • Food waste is managed responsibly beyond composting, with coconut waste repurposed through local community initiatives and suitable cooked food shared with local pig farms, supporting a circular approach to resource management
  • Wastewater is processed and used for gardening, and Kamalaya’s kitchens use energy-efficient chillers
  • Elimination of single-use plastic water bottles, food and beverage containers, straws and bar utensils, replacing plastic straws with biodegradable and bamboo options where possible
  • Fruit and vegetable waste diverted from landfill and composted on-and offsite site, with a portion of compost donated to local agricultural farms
  • Digital detox is cultivated at Kamalaya and there is no WiFi available in public areas, which naturally reduces the use of electronic devices, reconnecting guests to nature and the environment
  • Indigenous wood, rather than teak which comes with a high eco-cost of tropical forest deforestation, has been used throughout the property
  • Guest accommodation, open-air treatment rooms and yoga pavilions are designed to maximise natural airflow, reducing reliance on air conditioning
  • Kamalaya`s Superior Suites have solar-powered heaters, while all bedrooms use the aircon-saver function, which is a micro compressor air-conditioning device that reduces energy consumption for cooling by an average of 20%
  • Water-saving devices are installed throughout the property, and guests are encouraged to reuse towels and bed linen where appropriate
  • Kamalaya uses biodegradable straws and food containers, and drinking water comes in recyclable glass bottles and guests are gifted with refillable water bottles upon arrival
  • Eco-friendly cleaning products, together with environmentally friendly mosquito spray and coils, are used across the sanctuary
  • In December 2022, Kamalaya has signed UNESCO’s Sustainable Travel Pledge, a global initiative promoting sustainable travel, community resilience and heritage conservation globally
  • Ongoing staff awareness and engagement initiatives further strengthen the effectiveness of the waste segregation and recycling programs

COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

Supporting the local community is an important extension of Kamalaya’s commitment to responsible hospitality. Through charitable partnerships, educational initiatives and active participation in community events, we strive to contribute positively.

  • Kamalaya actively supports charitable initiatives across Koh Samui and encourages team members to participate in local charity runs and fundraising events, contributing both time and energy to support meaningful causes within the community
  • Since 2017, Kamalaya has provided ongoing financial support to the Koh Samui Cat and Dog Shelter, helping to fund food, medical care, vaccinations, and safe shelter for abandoned and stray animals
  • Each year, Kamalaya proudly supports National Children’s Day by partnering with local schools. The event brings together children, teachers, and Kamalaya team members for a day filled with fun, learning, connection and shared experiences, supporting the wellbeing and development of local communities while strengthening relationships with neighbouring schools and families.
