Why You Should Start Meditating

WHY YOU SHOULD START MEDITATING

Meditation for the mind is like a superfood for the body and a foundation for holistic wellbeing. It restores balance and peace and leads us to enhanced physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Meditating is the concentrated practice of mindfulness. By focusing the mind on our breath, a particular object, thought or activity, it helps clear the mind and trains it to focus attention, ultimately achieving a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. When we deal with a stressful or complicated task, meditation improves clarity and focus. It reduces mind ‘clutter’ and enables you to fully focus on the task at hand.

The benefits of meditation are seemingly endless, and they’ve been recognised since ancient times. Practice reduces stress and anxiety and enhances self-awareness and emotional health. It improves sleep quality and strengthens concentration and attention. Regular meditation restores a state of balance and peace, leading us to more abundant levels of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energy. Incorporating daily practice into the daily schedule is transformative to wellbeing and allows us to connect with our essential self by heightening self-awareness, alleviating anxiety and developing emotional resilience.

It’s also very simple to engage in. You just need to find a quiet place, sit in a comfortable position with your back straight or lie down if it’s more comfortable, and focus on your breathing. Count the breaths, noticing each inhale and exhale, then let thoughts pass, acknowledge any thoughts that come to mind without judgment and gently bring your focus back to your breath when they do. Start with short sessions, around 5-10 minutes, then gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice.

This is called Deep Breathing meditation, taking slow, deep breaths, focusing on each breath as it moves in and out of your body. You can also engage in mantra meditation, repeating a word or phrase to help focus the mind, or visualisation meditation, imagining a peaceful scene or focusing on a mental image. Movement meditation involves activities like yoga or walking meditation. You can do this outside in a luscious green, like at Kamalaya Koh Samui Wellness Sanctuary & Holistic Spa in Thailand, for the added benefits of forest bathing and vitamin tree therapy. You can delve deeper into the holistic whole being benefits of meditation and embark on a transformative journey with the Personal Yoga Synergy wellness program.
