Maintaining a healthy weight can feel like a frustrating cycle of trying harder, losing confidence and feeling as though your body is working against you.

Most of us think we know what we should be doing – eat better, exercise more and show more discipline.

But what if the problem isn’t willpower?

Looking beyond the number on the scales.

The desire to reach an ideal weight is often about more than the number on the scales. It may be about wanting to feel lighter or simply healthier in your body, have more energy and vitality, feel comfortable in yourself and have greater ease around your relationship with food and movement.

Rather than viewing weight loss or gain as an isolated concern, from a naturopathic perspective it can be helpful to consider the wider picture of wellbeing. Restorative sleep, for example, can have a meaningful influence on how we feel and function, while stress levels may naturally affect appetite and eating patterns and ability to shift weight. Nourishing, satisfying meals can help support the body’s needs, alongside movement that feels genuinely enjoyable to you, nurturing and sustainable.

For some, this may include strength or weight training as part of their journey towards a healthier weight; for others, it may be walking, swimming, yoga or simply finding more opportunities to move throughout the day. Even the simple foundations of good hydration and supportive daily routines can play a role in helping us feel more balanced, energised and connected to our wellbeing.

When we support these foundations, the benefits can extend beyond weight management. In this sense sustainable weight management is not simply about weighing less or more; it is about creating the conditions in which you can feel well.

What works well for one person may feel completely unsustainable for another. This is why stepping away from a one-size-fits all approach can be so valuable, rather than focusing solely on what needs to be restricted or removed, a more sustainable approach asks a different question: what can we put in place to support the body and create habits that can genuinely be maintained?

Hit Your Protein Target at Every Meal, Not Just Breakfast
Rather than a vague “eat more protein,” aim for roughly 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of ideal body weight per day (from Stuart Phillips’ research), spread evenly across three or four meals rather than loaded at dinner. This supports muscle retention during weight loss, which matters because muscle is what keeps metabolism from dropping as much as it otherwise would.

Choose Lower Energy Density Foods
This is the volumetrics principle: foods high in water and fibre (vegetables, broths, fruit) let you eat a satisfying volume of food for relatively few calories, compared with energy dense options like oils, nuts, or refined carbohydrates. Practically, this can look like starting a meal with a vegetable broth, soup or a large leafy salad before the main course.

Change One Habit at a Time
Drawing on the behaviour change principles from Atomic Habits, trying to overhaul diet, exercise, and sleep simultaneously tends to fail faster than picking a single small, specific habit (for example – always having a protein source visible in the fridge) and letting it become routine before adding the next one. This is a gentler, more sustainable route to the compliance that ultimately determines results on a weight program.
