Gut Health at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary, Thailand

Gut Health at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary, Thailand

“All disease begins in the gut” is often attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates. More than 2,000 years later, a growing body of scientific research confirms: the gut is far more than a digestive organ. It is a major influence on overall wellbeing, influencing immune system, metabolism, and even mental health. Drawing on this, Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary offers its own dedicated program.

What does “Gut Health” actually mean?

The term refers to the health of the entire digestive system, with the microbiome at its core – the collective community of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) that primarily inhabit our gut. Roughly 70 percent of the body’s immune cells are also located there. That figure alone illustrates why an imbalance can trigger far more than digestive complaints: fatigue, a weakened immune system, as well as mental and neurological conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, or dementia have all been associated with it in research, though as correlations rather than proven causes. In recent years, research has also brought the so-called gut-brain axis into focus: the gut communicates directly with the nervous system, and vice versa. What we eat, how we sleep, and how we manage stress all have a direct impact on our microbiome.

“When we look after the gut, we are not tending to a single organ; we are supporting the ground on which immunity, metabolism and mood are built,” says Rita Castanhito, Naturopath and Wellness Consultant at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary. She adds: “The gut tends to signal when it needs attention. The clearest signs are digestive: persistent bloating, discomfort after meals, or changes in bowel habits. Low energy, disturbed sleep, skin changes, and frequent minor infections can also point towards an imbalance worth exploring. No single symptom confirms a problem, but when several persist, they are the body’s invitation to look more closely.”

What constitutes a healthy diet

The body requires a steady supply of minerals, proteins, and healthy fats – as well as vitamins, of course. Vitamin D supports immune regulation, while Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, while Zinc supports the body’s antioxidant defenses. Equally important is not just what we eat, but when: highly processed foods, particularly when eaten in the evening, are associated with a disrupted circadian rhythm and poorer sleep – while a fibre-rich, nutrient-dense diet helps stabilise blood sugar levels and sustainably strengthen the microbiome.

As Rita explains: “So much of how we feel each day begins quietly, in the gut. Nourish it well, and you give the whole body a steadier foundation to thrive on.”

Throughout the Enriched Gut Program at Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary, strong emphasis is placed on a plant-based, nutrient-rich diet. Guests also receive a variety of body treatments, including Chi Nei Tsang (abdominal massage), Kati Vasti from the Ayurvedic tradition, as well as ozone therapy and targeted infusion therapies to support the body’s natural detoxification processes. Yoga, meditation and pranayama, along with treatments from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) such as acupuncture and cupping, round out the program. A dedicated team of wellness consultants, TCM practitioners and yoga teachers provide ongoing guidance, along with practical tips and strategies for continuing the journey at home.
