TURN YOUR FATIGUE INTO FLOW
After a long and demanding day, you finally find a moment to pause and unwind. The house is still and quiet, your responsibilities feel mostly set aside, and yet your mind continues to race about what tomorrow will bring. Thoughts linger, conversations replay and, despite feeling physically exhausted, true relaxation and balance seems just out of reach.
At Kamalaya, Isaias Rodrigues, Naturopathic Doctor and Nutritionist, frequently meets guests who recognise this experience. Many are navigating the pressures of demanding careers alongside family and caring responsibilities, while others are moving through significant life transitions, emotional challenges or periods of profound change. Although circumstances differ, they often share a common desire: finding space to pause, restore their energy and reconnect with themselves.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach and embodying Kamalaya’s holistic philosophy, Rodrigues shares the first step to success is truly understanding each guest’s individual circumstances, looking at daily routines and personal wellbeing goals and recognising that every individual’s journey towards greater balance and vitality is unique.
“Wherever the individual may be in their health, wellness and life journey, that is where we meet them,” says Rodrigues.
When tiredness becomes normal
For those accustomed to managing busy schedules and balancing multiple responsibilities, the natural response to fatigue is often pushing forward. Rest becomes something to look forward to once the next deadline has passed, an upcoming holiday, or life feels a little less demanding. Yet, all too often, that moment never arrives.
Rodrigues encourages guests to look beyond the immediate feeling of tiredness and explore your daily habits and patterns that may be contributing to fatigue. In exploring this, we can consider not only your own sleep patterns, nutrition, diet and lifestyle choices, but also the emotional and mental demands of everyday life. By bringing greater awareness to these patterns, guests can begin to recognise where small, meaningful changes may help restore your balance.
This is where the journey from fatigue to flow can begin. Rather than simply finding ways to keep going, it is about creating space each day to reconnect with yourself, regain mental clarity and rediscover a more natural rhythm. Sometimes, that simply means being fully present in a conversation with someone you love. At other times, it is the ability to step away from work, quiet the mind and embrace a moment of genuine rest, through a mindful walk.
Simple ways to renew your energy
While we cannot always control the demands of daily life, we can create small moments that nurture and shape our overall wellbeing. In-house Naturopath and Wellness Consultant Rita Castanhito, encourages guests to integrate simple, meaningful changes that can help restore energy.
Here are some simple but impactful moments to support energy levels:
Get outside within an hour of waking
Spend 10 to 20 minutes outdoors in the morning: drink your tea on the terrace, or take a short walk. Even on a cloudy day, outdoor light is many times brighter than indoor lighting. Morning light is one of the strongest signals for setting your body clock, which helps you feel more alert during the day and ready for sleep at night.
Plan for a lunch that keeps you steady and try and eat at the same time
Fill your plate with a good source of protein, animal or plant-based, and plenty of fibre from vegetables, pulses and wholegrains. Protein and fibre both slow the rise in blood sugar after a meal, which helps keep your energy steadier through the afternoon. A very large, sugary or refined-carbohydrate meal can deepen the natural early-afternoon dip in alertness. Eat at roughly the same times each day, away from screens, and keep water within reach, because even mild dehydration is linked to tiredness and poorer concentration.
Break up sitting with short bursts of movement
Every 60 minutes, try to stand up and move for a few minutes. When your energy flags in the early afternoon, try a brisk 10-minute walk, outdoors if you can. Research consistently shows that short bouts of light to moderate activity increase feelings of energy and reduce fatigue. It does not need to be intense to help.
Protect the evening so tomorrow starts well
Have your last coffee or caffeinated tea at least six hours before bed. Dim the lights in the final hour and set aside work and stimulating content. To wind down, try slow breathing with a longer out-breath (breathe in for four, out for six) for about five minutes.
Waking at a consistent time, weekends included, helps your rhythm settle.
Look for the deeper and hidden causes of fatigue, don’t just ignore it
If you feel tired most days despite resting well, it may be time to speak to a health practitioner. Low iron (especially in menstruating women), low vitamin B12, low vitamin D, and thyroid imbalances are common, testable causes of prolonged fatigue.
Give your mind some white space
In her book Finding Focus, behavioural scientist Dr Zelana Montminy suggests building “digital white space” into each day: short, deliberate pauses with no input at all, so no screens, music or podcasts. A few times a day, step away for two to five minutes, look out of a window or sit quietly outside. In between, work on one task at a time and silence non-essential notifications.
Constantly switching between tasks drains mental energy, while short breaks reduce fatigue.
A return to balance
The journey from fatigue into flow is not about doing more, pushing harder or striving for perfection. It begins with something far simpler, yet often overlooked: giving yourself permission to pause, listen to what your body and mind truly need.
Sometimes, the most meaningful changes begin with the smallest moments. A quiet morning enjoying your tea in the morning sunlight, a mindful and nourishing meal enjoyed without distraction or the simple decision to let a busy day come to an end.
Lasting wellbeing is not found in a single moment but cultivated through the active choices we make throughout each day. By embracing a more mindful rhythm, we create space not only to restore our energy, but also to rediscover our sense of balance, clarity and joy.
